Silicone Rubber is a very popular material across industrial, commercial as well as in visual arts. It possesses so many unique properties that make it ideal for various sophisticated application.
What is Silicone Rubber ?
Silicone Rubber is synthetic elastomer which made out by joining inorganic polysiloxane chains together. Silicon & Oxygen are backbone atoms for these polysiloxane chain. Additionally, normally it has two or more organic methyl group attached to each silicon atom. Length of polysiloxane chains mostly decide crucial properties like heat resistance & electrical characteristic.
Types of Silicone Rubber
Silicone Rubber is an uncured rubber which needs to set it correctly for making it durable, flexible silicone elastomer. Certain additives or accelerators have to be added to the uncured rubber, and this whole chemical process is known as vulcanization.
In fact, different types of silicone rubber primarily vary depending on the method and temperature of curing. Such as:
Solid Silicone Rubber (HTV) – This silicone comes in a solid state. It needs to be cured at a very high temperature and is hence a high-temperature vulcanizing rubber. It offers excellent aging resistance & heat resistance properties and is widely used in different industrial sectors like automotive, electronics, electrical, etc..
Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) – This silicone is available in a liquid state. It is a two-part compound and must be mixed with a catalyst for curing. It is also a high-temperature vulcanizing rubber that displays low viscosity and quick cycle time. The superior process advantages make it ideal for various applications, especially for making injection molding silicone rubber parts which are used in medical, auto and other mechanical engineering industries.
Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) – This silicone rubber cures at room temperature itself. It comes as both one-part and two-part compounds. In the latter case, the vulcanization can only be achieved through many catalysts such as tin, platinum or even peroxide. Apart from industrial usage, the two-part RTVs are generally used to make silicone molds and casts.
Applications of Silicone Rubber :
Gasket & Rubber Seals :
Gasket & Silicone Rubber Seal made out from silicone rubber are very flexible & durable. It also offers excellent low as well high temperature resistance, UV resistance, ozone resistance, great weatherability & other properties which are unparalleled in other elastomers which make it ideal choice.
Silicone Rubber Tubing :
Tubing made out from silicone rubber are chemically insert, non-reactive, odorless & tasteless. Additionally, it can be made in Food Grade, Class VI and other special grade compound which makes elastomer of choice for making tubing.
Electrical Conductive Products :
By adding carbon or other conductive material silicone rubber become electrically conductive material and it still holds physical & mechanical elastomeric properties which makes it perfect candidate for making computer & electronics components.
Kitchenware & Baking ware:
High temperature resistance, availability in food grade material, chemically inertness, excellent durability as well as vibrant color choice makes silicone rubber as perfect rubber material for making kitchenware & baking ware products which people can love.
